"Le Scalille" typical Calabrian Christmas dessert

Scalille, also called Scaliddre, Scaliddri, Scalilli, Scaliddi or Scalette, are traditional Calabrian sweets for the Christmas holidays. The term means, in the Calabrian dialect, "small stairs" , "ladders" , which, in a metaphorical sense, indicate the starting point, precisely the stairs, to undertake an ascending journey towards Jesus, celebrated by the Christian Church on the very day Christmas.

In every Calabrian city this typical dessert has its own pronunciation. Our ancient recipe is prepared in the laboratories based on eggs, Italian flour and anise, then it is subsequently covered by our artisans with various icings:
